By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing EditorCalling their Broadband Accelerator “a major paradigm shift in the way telecom carriers address the digital divide,” Actelis (News - Alert) Networks President and CEO Vivek Ragavan announced that the Broadband Accelerator was recently awarded TMC’s 2011 INTERNET TELEPHONY Product of the Year, and will be featured with the other 2011 Product of the Year winners in the January/February 2012 issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine (www.itmag.com).
TMC (News - Alert) officials say that Actelis was selected “for its vision, leadership and thoroughness, demonstrating that the BBA can have a significant and positive impact on the growth of universal broadband.”
Company officials say that using Actelis BBA can help boost broadband rates “by as much as 100 percent on typical loops, and more than 400 percent on long loops, increasing DSL penetration rates in underserved and unserved communities.”
Last week TMC had the news that KGP Logistics, a provider of equipment and integrated services to the communications industry, signed an exclusive distribution agreement to stock and distribute Actelis` Broadband Accelerator product line.
Announcing the deal, KGP officials said part of their objective is to “help US carriers deliver universal broadband service to the millions of Americans who are either out of reach or do not meet the FCC`s (News - Alert) current definition of broadband as 4 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream.” By connecting the remaining one third of the country, an estimated 100 million US consumers will be online, according to the FCC`s Broadband Adoption Taskforce.
Actelis is certainly a contributor to universal broadband’s robust growth -- according to research from the Economics and Statistics Administration and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, three years ago broadband Internet adoption was 51 percent. Today it stands at 68 percent of US households.
Not content to rest on the company’s considerable laurels, Ragavan noted that “nearly one third” of the United States “is still without access to broadband.” He explained the company’s vision for BBA by saying that carriers around the world can use the product to help them increase broadband penetration rates “and coverage area for DSL-based services.”
Actelis’ BBA can also allow carriers to offer triple-play services, including IPTV (News - Alert), Actelis officials say, citing research from Screen Digest’s IPTV Market Monitor Q2 2011 Report showing that this opens up a global subscriber base of over 47 million.
And as well as helping bring broadband to traditionally out-of-reach customers, BBA can also assist carriers looking to “generate incremental revenue from new applications such as on-demand and over-the-top video services,” Actelis officials noted.
